Scuba diving inside the Kittiwake Shipwreck
COST: $10
There is no better way of exploring the wonderful history of an island aside from actually venturing into its deep blue see where a shipwreck solemnly rests along with the beautiful marine culture. The Kittiwake Shipwreck was an ex-USA Navy Vessel that was purposely sunk into the bottom of the Seven Mile Beach to become an artificial reef for the marine culture. In its heyday, the Kittiwake vessel was used as a submarine rescue vessel by helping it during trials, assisting it when there are repairs to be done, providing supplies and manpower, as well as to helping them recover practice torpedoes.
● For 51 years, the Kittiwake ship served its purpose for the US Navy in assisting it to do its duty.
● By 1994, it was purchased by the government of The Cayman Islands to become an artificial reef and in preparation, they head to cleanse the vessel of all traces of oils, chemicals, and other toxins that may harm the marine environment as the purpose of it was to provide new life.
● Some of its interior fixtures have also been removed for it to be safe to explore as well.
Since then, the shipwreck of Kittiwake has served as a new home for fishes and coral reefs where they can flourish freely. It has also become a popular spot for recreational divers to roam around due to its magnificent and naturally-embedded history of over a quarter of a century. For only $5, recreational snorkelers can explore its premises freely and it only costs $10 for divers with proper gear. All the proceeds go the maintenance of the historic ship and its preservation, to ensure it will last for generations to come.
So there you have it, three cheap activities that you can do without whipping out your credit card and while still having loads of fun because enjoying nature or travel doesn't necessarily have to be expensive.
