Being a creative person can come with a host of problems and one of the big ones is creative blocks. This can be tough, especially if your job is to be creative every day. Some of us can’t afford to have an off day. With this in mind, here are some suggestions to help you get out of a creative funk and back to creating art.
Go to the gym
This is a strange one but hear us out for a second. Most people hate the gym because it is boring. It is a solitary exercise practice that leaves you alone with your own thoughts. This is exactly what you need when you have a creative block. Get yourself a gym membership from Fitness 19 and hit the gym a few times a week to get your muscles flexed and your brain ready to roll. Make sure that you have your phone or a notepad for any flashes of inspiration while you are on the treadmill.
Light a candle
This is a favourite of writers around the world but it works wonders. The simple act of sitting down and lighting a candle from somewhere like the Country Bumpkin Candle Company is a great way to focus your mind every day. Every time you light the candle, your brain will know it is time to work and will shift over to creative mode. This is a favourite trick of Marian Keyes who shared it recently on one of her Instagram Lives. With 13 novels and 33 million sales worldwide, who are we to argue with her? If you don’t like candles, you could try a wax warmer with a light so that you get the smell and glow of the candle without the fire hazard.
Go for a walk
There are so many famous writers that include walking as part of their daily routine, it would be impossible to list them here. However, the fact that there are so many writers that use this as part of their daily writing practice says a lot about the efficacy of walking. A lot of people find that they don’t have as much time to write if they go for a walk but what they do write in the time is of better quality. So, grab those walking shoes and get out there for an hour to get the brain fired up just like the great writers of the past used to do.
Have a bath
This might not apply to everyone because not all bathrooms have baths. However, if you have a bath, it is a good idea to use it when you can. Relaxing with some bath salts or bubbles can help to switch off the noise in your brain for a while. Once this noise is switched off, new ideas and concepts can bubble to the surface. If this method works for you, make sure you invest in some good bath products to make the experience even better. And if you don’t have a bath, you could have a relaxing shower with some essentials.
