When it comes to branching out or trying to tap into a new career path or field of interest one of the biggest stumbling blocks can be a lack of experience. Having relevant experience can be what makes one candidate stand out from the next. If this sounds familiar to you and you are in need of more experience then consider these methods to help you gain that invaluable experience.

Interning

Internships can be offered by companies on a part-time basis or even a remote basis, so there is a possibility for internships to fit around your current employment. One of the advantages of internships is that they are paid work experience, unlike volunteering. Although the pay is often low and the work can be boring and laborious. That said the role of the intern is greatly valued as not only will it give you essential experience it also shows your commitment to the new field you are pursuing. Further interning can give you experience in many disciplines and contribute to building a diverse and extensive professional portfolio as attested by Nathaniel Whittle.

Volunteering

If interning isn’t a possibility then consider undertaking volunteering. Although volunteering is an unpaid role it can be very flexible and you can usually volunteer as much or as little as you want on a schedule that suits you. Like interning, volunteering not only provides you with a raft of new experiences but it portrays your willingness and commitment to your new career path or field of interest.

Take a course

Going back into education whether full or part-time can be another great way of gaining experience and knowledge. Particularly if the course in question offers hands-on practical experience. Undertaking a professional course can help expand your knowledge, skillset, and confidence in the subject and again show your commitment.

Ask for greater experience at work

It may be that you are unable to undertake volunteering or internships, perhaps you have family or employment restrictions preventing you. If so, consider whether there are any current opportunities within your workplace. It may be that you can gain experience or knowledge by undergoing project work or even volunteering within your current employment.

Call in favors

If you know people who work in the industry you are looking to expand into then now is the time to call upon them for help. If the situation allows networking amongst friends and family should not be overlooked. Chances are loved ones and friends will be happy to help you and mindful of the fact that everyone started somewhere, somebody may have even given them a helping hand when they started out. Or maybe you will be able to help them in a way that also helps you. Perhaps you are looking to move into educational work or setting, if you have friends with children could they benefit from tutoring services for example? Think outside of the box in ways in which you can gain some hands-on experience and do something that makes your resume or application form stand out from the crowd.
