When I was an exchange student in Germany, my host mother made amazing food. My favorite, however, wasn’t German but Italian, tiramisu. She told me tiramisu means pick me (tira-pick, mi-me, su-up) up in Italian because it’s a caffeinated dessert. I also felt like a grown-up eating an alcoholic dessert.

Once, I had a glass of expensive wine, and it was undrinkable. I replaced it with a more familiar variety and wondered what makes a wine expensive or inexpensive. Since that day, two things happened: first, I had a different wine with the same taste.

Back in my twenties, going out on the town was a common occurrence. My friend and I typically drank beer. Our tastes had yet to mature. We did enjoy some whiskey, but not neat. We drank, at that time, Old Fashioneds. Now, I typically drink wine and like my whiskey on ice with no mixers. Back then, though, the Old Fashioned did the trick. Here is a recipe for an old favorite.
