These are the steps to writing a thesis that is readable, compelling, and interesting.

Anyone writing a thesis should identify the requirements of the examiners and give them what they want. This is a good guideline, but it should be expanded upon to be truly helpful. To confirm what thesis examiners are looking for in a thesis, I first did a systematic review on the literature. Next, I reviewed different literature to identify advice for writing thesis. Here's a summary of my findings.

Your thesis should be a great read for your field

First, determine the area you are contributing to. Is it for biochemists as a whole or for a specific subfield? Even though your theories are based in psychology, are you writing for art historians? You can learn a lot from reading well-written articles in your field.

You can improve your thesis if it is unique (e.g., if your research is multi-disciplinary or uses a unique method or approach).

To make your thesis more reader-friendly, re-write

Write down the things you want to communicate. You may not have a clear idea. After you have written it down, try a rewrite to ensure that it is easy for readers. Asking for feedback is a good idea. You can use the feedback to improve your writing by identifying where readers are confused, engaged, interested, or struggling.

You should revise your thesis before you submit it. This includes the abstract, introduction and literature review. Your literature review was probably written early in your candidature. If your writing is better, you should rewrite it. To eliminate any mistakes in grammar, spelling or formatting, make sure you proofread it thoroughly.

Make it easy to follow the thesis

Examiners must follow your ideas. Therefore, you should have a clear flow between chapters. Your examiners may read your thesis in sections over several weeks. They might have forgotten what you wrote in the first chapter by time they reach the sixth.

Here are some useful tools to help you do this:

* Summary and reviews at the beginning or end of a chapter or section (In this chapter, I will first...then ...);

* Referring backwards or forwards in your thesis (I'll expand on this point at chapter six ...;, as I mentioned in chapter two ...);

* Use topic sentences in paragraphs to clearly state your main point.

* To demonstrate the linking of ideas, repeating terms should be used in each paragraph. For example, if one paragraph was about energy, the next paragraph should include "energy" to illustrate the connection.

* Use linking phrases to show how one paragraph is related to another. Start one paragraph by saying "A first method is ..."" and then move on to the next paragraph with "Another method is ...").."

Ask someone to read your thesis and see if they understand it. If they are unable to follow your instructions, you can explain your reasoning to them.

Your thesis should be persuasive

Your thesis must convince the examiners. Each chapter should contain key claims and conclusions. You must also provide convincing evidence and citations supporting these claims. It is not enough to say that "Increasing C02 threatens the human diet". Also, you must provide data, citations, and reasons why the reader should accept your claims. Ask someone to review your claims and confirm that they agree with you.

Engage in convincing conversation with the literature

Your research must be justified. You can do this by citing evidence from literature to support your claim.

Your examiners will be convinced that your research will add value to their field. You can do this by presenting evidence from the literature on what has been done and what needs to be done. Your literature review should include your main ideas, themes, and claims. You can also use the literature to support your conclusions. Do not simply list who said it. Do not simply list who said what. Instead, you should state the main conclusion and then provide references. For example, "The crops that produce our required source of iron and zinc have lower concentrations when grown in conditions with higher C02 (Thomas 2012; Ying 2013; Adelhardt 2016).

Select the best approach

Also, you must show that your method is appropriate for the topic. You must also use the literature to support your method. Is it based on a proven approach that is suitable for your research topic or do you need a completely new approach?

Your examiners should agree that your thesis can be published.

Describe your findings and discuss the implications for your field's literature. Be specific about how your findings have confirmed, complicated, expanded or rejected, vindicated, or discredited previous research. Make sure you are clear about the contribution and show that it is worth consideration.
