Now and again it is easy for us to find ourselves in a rut. Whether it be watching the same shows every night, eating the same old meals, or working in the same job - now and again we as humans need change to thrive and grow.

Experiencing new things can be a huge asset, and that’s why today we want to talk a little bit about how you can improve your life by trying new hobbies. It is so important to try out a new hobby now and again, and here are some fun ones you can try to help you step out of your rut and learn a new skill!

Here are some fun activities you can try this year to learn something brand new.

Painting

If you want to try something a little different and artistic this winter, painting can be a wonderful thing. Art in general is always a valuable way for us to let go of our stresses and put our emotions and thoughts on paper. It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or an expert, creating art is relaxing and it can be a fun skill to learn. Try looking for painting tutorials on YouTube and start playing around with colour and learning how to mix. There are so many stunning pieces you could make as an amateur artist, and it is always a great idea to play around with.

Cooking

Cooking is a skill that every adult should have, however this is not always the case. If you are a little lacking in the kitchen department, it is important to take some time out to learn how to cook. Simple skills such as learning how to grill a chicken breast perfectly or how to cook fluffy rice are great to learn and will help you to vamp up your weekly meal plans. Consider taking a cooking class in your local area and learning about the difference between a bechamel and a mornay, and soon being in the kitchen won’t feel like a chore, it will be a relaxing space for you to experiment and create. If sweets are more your thing, you could experiment with desserts - this Oreo cheesecake recipe might be a good place to start, as it only requires six ingredients and no oven to create something delicious!

Robotics

If you want to try something completely out of left field this year, and perhaps you’ve seen that episode of Rick and Morty with the butter robot and want a piece of that action - learning how to build robotics is fascinating. Automated Curiosity offers lots of tips and will help to teach you about robotics and the key fundamentals it takes to take a bunch of metal and turn it into something with its own mind and purpose. Robotics can be a great skill to learn for your own fun as well as for some cognitive growth. It is a fun hobby and you’ll be able to learn a lot about science and engineering along the way.

Pottery

Pottery is a creative outlet that is incredibly popular and it is easy to see why. Creating stunning pots, planters, and mugs at home is relaxing, and then being able to heat and glaze these with your own unique patterns is super fun and cathartic. Consider buying yourself a diy pottery kit and fry your hand at creating some fun little trinkets this winter. Once you get the hang of shaping clay and moulding it, you could invest in a small pottery wheel and have some fun at home. These can be used as gifts, and you can even open your own Etsy shop and sell them in the future.

Upholstery

Upholstery is a hobby that is not as common as it used to be - but if you love to restore old items this is the ideal hobby for you to try. You can find bargain chairs and other furnishings at car boot sales and auctions, and then bring them home to reupholster them and make them good as new. This type of upcycling can be a great hobby and you can even sell these on for a proxy once they have been restored!

Sewing

Sewing is a skill that is less popular than it used to be, however if you love fashion and have always wanted to try making your own dresses - this is the ideal Segway to learn. There are many different types of stitch, many techniques to learn, and once you get your hands on a good sewing machine you can make your own clothes, pillowcases, and other items.

If you are in need of a change this year, consider trying one of these fun hobbies and learn a great new skill.
