I knew I wanted to see Lung this year. Their unique sound drew me in. There was nothing quite like it.
After I saw the two member group perform for their first Treefort show, I sat down with Daisy and Kate.
“We’re a band from Cincinnati, Ohio. We met in the music scene there and we’ve been making music ever since.”
The pair live only a couple of blocks away from each other, and worked to make music over the internet and in person during the pandemic.
The Instruments
The first thing you notice when you see these two play is the distinct sound, because it seems like there should be more members of the band. There is so much sound, it just doesn’t seem possible.
WIth looping effects and Kate using her voice like an instrument, they create a unique experience. This is in part due to her skill with an electric cello.
The cello itself is interesting. “It’s actually a child’s training cello,” Daisy told me. “The pickups handle distortion better. An acoustic chello sounds good, but the more expensive cellos don’t work as well.”
The cello internally remains “stock” but the output has been changed so you can plug it into almost anything.
“We tried some nicer cellos early on with the band, but they sounded too nice.”
The drums are also different. First, they look different from the start, almost like an odd set of pipes.
‘It’s a set made by North Drums,” Daisy told me. “I got them from a 70 year old plumber who played them and also used them as a visual for his company.”
It turns out neither of their instruments is particularly expensive, but between the modifications of the cello and the uniqueness of the drum set, they would be hard to replace.
The Next Two Lung Albums
It turned out Lung had a new album nearly complete, but being shopped around to some larger labels when COVID hit. “At that point, everything just stopped,” Daisy told me.
“It just wasn’t the time to release music,” Kate said. “At least not for us. So we’ll have an album out soon that’s really a four-year-old album. And we’ve got another one we wrote and worked on over the last couple years, and that will be out this year, too.
Their most recent release has some great tunes as well, and they’ll be touring on that one for quite some time.
The Ongoing Lung Tour
Speaking of touring, the band won’t stop touring anytime soon. They plan to “just keep releasing stuff, and keep touring.” It sounds like a fantastic plan.
It was a privilege and delight to have this great band at Treefort and give a chance to sit down and talk with them.
