Treefort Roamin’ Day One
By Brian McKay
It’s back! Write fast gakusei, write fast. Your Senei is a full list of bands and awaits you. Day one of Treefort was the start of what will be pure exhaustion about 1 am - 2 am every day and then sleeping until noon, but it’s worth it.
No other writing will be done this week and earnings will suffer but all for a cause. A cause that is my enjoyment.
There was no better possible start than Acid Tongue. This band has a Seattle vibe we all love and transcends into something just a little more epic and a little more vibrant. Starting aptly at 4.20 pm, this was my pre-planned band for the day. Most of the rest would be the typical Brian roam.
Next, burger… Yumm. Owyhee Tavern.
What else we got in here. Oh, a little band I don’t know. Actually a few of those. Mercury Rev, in the business since 1989, is kind of the killer, grinding, psychedelic rock of alternative. Here I got to use the press pass perks, which included some killer close-ups, especially of the keyboardist who was quite attractive in her keyboardist ways. Video would be post were it not for the frustration of figuring out how to use a new mic and using really shitty Internet right now. Ugh
Ok more roaming, oh serious note is Chong the Nomad. So killer. Chong is a one-woman show and set up the set herself before getting into it. She sucks your into kind of this trance and is more fun than I had imagined. Sonic Temple Blue is also a cool venue despite the need for some more air movement.
Boise’s own Lo Fi is a must see around town, and Ghost Funk Orchestra was a blast.
The Fungineers was the experience no one expects. A supergroup of alien puppets with an occasional vagina and penis puppet in the mix was unreal. Add in that it was in the glorious Egyptian Theater, and it was spectacular.
That’s it. Short. Gotta Roll people and get there for Blood Lemon. Stay tuned.
